This course is for anyone
who would like to explore the disciplines of patchwork and quilting.
Many people who have the basic skills can join this class to further
their individual design skills. It is also suitable for students
who have embroidery skills but would like to explore the practical
techniques of patchwork and quilting. No previous design skills
are necessary and basic sewing skills are useful but not essential.
The course leads to a nationally recognised City and Guilds qualification.
Throughout the course experimentation and the development of a personal
style is encouraged.
This is a two year course. In the first
year students will explore design elements and be introduced to
a wide range of patchwork, applique and quilting techniques. They
will complete five sets of design work based on colour, line, texture,
shape and form which can be used to inspire the production of a
range of patchwork and quilted samples for their portfolio. Techniques
taught will include traditional and contemporary patchwork methods,
applique, quilting, colouring of cloth, bindings, decorative edges
and much more. Personal folders containing relevant notes are compiled
for both the design and practical units. In the second year students
will continue to learn new techniques. They will build on their
gained in year 1 to design and make five individual patchwork and
quilted samples.
It is necessary to be able to devote
some time at home to work between teaching sessions. Initially students
enrol for one year. The work will be exhibited at the college exhibition.
It will be moderated by an external examiner.
